Bison Grazing on the Upper Missouri
Description
The upper Missouri was a naturalist's paradise to the enthusiastic Maximilian as he described it in the fall of 1833. Several of Bodmer's studies in this region furnished the basis for aquatint plates included in the picture atlas published in Europe. This scene, depicting a herd of buffalo grazing on the rich Missouri bottoms, is dated September 19, but may be a later version based upon a s field sketch of this date.
